A bronze sculpture titled “King Rama 9 – I Was Born in the 9th Reign” by Santi Vipaka, inspired by a classic image of a young boy bowing to King Rama 9 during a royal visit to Pattani Province in 1973.
This bronze casting sculpture titled “King Rama 9 I Was Born in the 9th Reign” by Santi Vipaka comes in two sizes: a 9-inch height limited edition of 199 pieces and a 9 cm height with an unlimited production run. The inspiration for this work comes from a classic image in Thai lore, depicting a young boy named Phayung Sak was bowing in reverence to King Rama 9 while accompanying him and the queen on their work visit to Pattani Province in 1973 (B.E. 2516).
King Rama 9, also known as His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, was the ninth monarch of Thailand from the Chakri dynasty. He reigned for over 70 years and was deeply revered by the Thai people for his dedication to their well-being and his contributions to the country’s development. This sculpture, “King Rama 9 I Was Born in the 9th Reign,” pays homage to his legacy and the enduring respect he commands, as depicted through the image of a young boy bowing in reverence during a significant royal visit to Pattani Province in 1973. The sculpture not only captures a moment in history but also serves as a reminder of the enduring bond between the Thai people and their beloved monarch.
This iconic photograph was selected as one of the top five images by the exhibition committee to celebrate the 60th anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s accession to the throne. The exhibition was titled “In Search of People in Photographs,” catapulting this image and the boy in it to widespread recognition. The captivating innocence and charm of the young boy in the photograph charmed many on that day.
Phayung Sak mentioned that at the time of the photograph, he was 4 years old. His father, Flt.Lt. Chit Kalamikh, was serving in the military at Ingkhayutthaborihan Camp near Bo Thong Airport, tasked with receiving and accompanying the royal visit. His mother, Jutalak Kalamikh, brought him to greet Their Majesties at Bo Thong Airport in Nong Chik District, Pattani Province. When his mother asked him to bow, he immediately ran forward to bow before His Majesty the King.
“At that time, my son liked to be at the front and always requested to be at the front whenever we received or bid farewell to Their Majesties, so he could bow before His Majesty every time,” said Jutalak, Phayung Sak’s mother.
